After the 2004 dissolution of Jane's Addiction, frontman Perry Farrell bypassed recording a new Porno for Pyros or solo album, opting instead to form Satellite Party. As implied by its name, the L.A.-based ensemble is committed to conjuring up the day-glo vibe of a cosmic festival. A very fitting outlet for Farrell's eccentric New Age persona, Satellite Party also features his wife, Etty, on backing vocals, and, most intriguingly, former Extreme six-stringer Nuno Bettencourt, who proves to be a surprisingly good foil for the lively singer.
While nothing on 2007's ULTRA PAYLOADED rivals the finest Jane's or Pyros material, Farrell sounds liberated on many of the album's best tracks, which include "Wish Upon a Dog Star," a soaring alt-rock anthem, and "Hard Life Easy," a dance-oriented, funk-metal workout that features guitarist John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Other notables on ULTRA PAYLOADED's guest list include Frusciante's bandmate Flea, Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie, New Order bassist Peter Hook, and, reciting poetry from beyond the grave, the Doors' Jim Morrison. Of course, nobody should be shocked by this over-the-top celebration--after all, Farrell was the guy who started Lollapalooza.
